We are so glad to mark our tenth year in business in 2011! In that time we have photographed hundreds of weddings all over the Triangle and surrounding areas. To celebrate and give back to the wonderful people who have made this business a success, we created this site as a resource for our clients and also for those whom may become clients. Under the tab WEDDING STORIES we have pages dedicated to:
- bridal portraits
- engagement portraits
- suggestions for hair and make-up artists
- a full listing of our pricing and products
- our favorite locations, which include Fearrington, The Carolina Inn, The Umstead, The Duke Chapel, The Washington Duke, The Carolina Club, The Carolina Country Club and The Hope Valley Country Club.
You are also welcome to search for other venues as well as your favorite vendors using our SEARCH feature in the upper, right-hand corner.
One of my favorite parts of shooting a wedding celebration is the happy chaos of dancing at the reception. At this point, typically, I have been with the wedding party for 5 hours and everyone is completely ignoring me. This is perfect for a documentary photographer. So I just dive into the melee. During the wedding reception of Margo MacNair and Brad Hutchens a beautiful brown hat became another character in their wedding story. Check out this photo montage that will be in their KPO Signature Album. I hope the hat made it out ok!
This wedding reception took place at Fearrington’s Granary. You can see the whole album layout here.
Margo and Brad are both tall, slim and good-looking. They have an easy way with each other that will serve them well in their marriage. I had photographed their engagement portrait on the UNC campus (Go Heels! That’s for you, Brad) and then also photographed Margo’s bridal portrait at Fearrington. I have really enjoyed getting to know them very much! They were married at University United Methodist Church, which is the church Brad grew up in. They had their reception at Fearrington because Margo loved the cows. I can’t think of a better reason!

Leslie and Craig were married in an intimate ceremony surrounded by their closest family and friends on August 20, 2011. They chose The Umstead for its serene beauty and excellent service. What a great choice! After the ceremony a bagpiper led the guests to the reception via a wooded trail alongside a pond. What a nice shout out to Craig’s heritage. It moved his mom and sister to tears! In life Leslie is a dietitian and Craig is an educator. They are perfect for each other. I wish them so much happiness!
Whenever a family chooses KPO Photo to photograph their daughter’s wedding we are so honored to be asked. When they ask us to photograph their second daughter’s wedding we feel like the luckiest photographers in the world! Really, it is such a great thing to get to know a family well and then be able to come back in to document another huge milestone for them. This was the case with Julia Lacy. We had photographed her sister, Anne’s wedding, in 2009. Their mom, Marian, told me that after Julia and Jesse got engaged I was the first wedding professional she contacted. Thank you, Marian!
Julia and Jesse are both teachers at The Field School in Washington, DC. When I first met them two years ago at Anne and Matt’s wedding I was struck by how much fun they had together, always dancing and laughing. I am so glad we could be there for their wedding day! They were married at Watts Street Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina and held their reception at Bay 7.

On August 6, 2011 Kathryn Colahan and Erik Schmidt tied the knot at their alma mater, Duke University, surrounded by their wonderful group of friends and family. They met at Duke but now live in the the windy city of Chicago, Illinois. This couple has so much in common. They describe themselves as relatively low key people who love to laugh. At the core of their relationship is a wonderful, close friendship that will serve them well in their marriage. We were so glad to be asked to photograph their wedding. Congratulations to Kathryn and Erik!

Elizabeth White and Dan Vallero were married on a gorgeous Saturday in April at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens. This couple was so relaxed and fun to be with that both Sarah and I commented on how lucky we felt to be there witnessing their union. They held their reception at The Carolina Inn, which had a vintage garden feel. You can see their WEDDING STORY by clicking on the image below. Or, for the WHOLE STORY visit their gallery by clicking HERE.
Elizabeth made her own jewelry as well as jewelry for all the bridesmaids. Amazing!
What a beautiful way to make an entrance!
Dan was greeting guests as they arrived while Elizabeth and the ladies were hiding in the garden.
I just love to see the expressions on people’s faces when they see their betrothed for the first time on their wedding day! Above is Elizabeth and below is Dan.
As they walked out they wandered through the garden and had a little quiet time. They were both beaming!
I can’t think of a prettier place to take portraits!
I just loved how Elizabeth’s bridal portrait turned out. She is such a natural beauty which I think really comes through! This framed print now lives in her parent’s house.
Their reception was in the Old Well room at The Carolina Inn. Even while surrounded by 150 people they were still very much focused on each other.
Elizabeth’s father made the piece that held their wedding cupcakes. There were so many wonderful details at this wedding and nearly all of them were created by friends and family.
I had to levitate to get this photo!
Towards the end of the night I noticed that Elizabeth and Dan had been missing from the reception for a bit. I found them here, enjoying the front porch of The Carolina Inn.
The End!
Natalie and Joey were married on April 9, 2011 at the beautiful Carolina Club. This highly intelligent couple have been busy finishing medical school at Case Western in Cleveland, Ohio and will be starting residency next year. So, during the planning I mostly worked with Natalie’s parents who are originally from Russia. They did such a wonderful job of making sure their wedding day was special. Both the ceremony and reception took place at The Carolina Club, which was so convenient for everyone. They had a traditional Jewish wedding which means they are married under a chuppah. This is a canopy under which a Jewish couple stand during their wedding ceremony. It consists of a cloth or sheet, stretched or supported over four poles, or sometimes manually held up by attendants to the ceremony. A chuppah symbolizes the home that the couple will build together. The couples parents had the honor of holding up the chuppah. Thanks so much, Natalie and Joey, for letting us be a part of your wedding day!
The Carolina Club has a breezeway of sorts that connects the two buildings. It is just perfect for portraits with a view of the beautiful, UNC campus. And especially perfect for a rainy April day.
Joey and the men braved the rain for an outdoor portrait.
Natalie’s face really lit up once she made it down the aisle to see Joey.
The had so many wonderful toasts, including a long poem written especially for this occasion by Natalie’s grandfather.
On the right is Natalie’s mother and grandmother.
They had so many close friend who came from all over to celebrate with them.
After a long honeymoon in Europe, Natalie and Joey returned and sent me this note about their photos:
Dear Kristin,
Thank you very much for all of your hard work. The pictures look beautiful. Joey and I were both very impressed with how you were able to capture so many of the important and special moments of the night. The wedding was such a blur, it was nice to relive it and notice many of the details we missed on the actual day. We know these pictures will remain special to us and our family and friends for years to come.
Thanks so much!
Natalie and Joey
